Our History

Delta Gamma Iota was founded in 1965 at Vincennes University in Vincennes, Indiana, upon three enduring principles: Diligence, Brotherhood, and Integrity. Guided by a desire for growth and improvement, the fraternity expanded nationally in 1973 under the name Sigma Phi Epsilon.

In 1992, Sigma Phi Epsilon withdrew its charters from two-year institutions due to financial considerations. Undeterred, the remaining Brothers resolved to preserve the spirit and traditions that defined their bond. Their commitment led to the re-establishment of Delta Gamma Iota on December 5, 1993, reaffirming the fraternity’s original values and purpose.

In the Fall of 1997, two Brothers from the Alpha Chapter continued their education at Ball State University. Determined to recreate the Brotherhood they had known at Vincennes within Ball State’s vibrant Greek community, they began laying the foundation for a new chapter from a single dorm room. As additional Alpha Chapter Brothers enrolled and new Founding Fathers were recruited, their vision became reality.

The Gamma Chapter of Delta Gamma Iota was officially founded on February 7, 1998, and received formal recognition from Ball State University on February 17, 1999.

Since its inception, Delta Gamma Iota has welcomed generations of pledge classes who have carried forward the bonds of Brotherhood. Today, the active chapter continues to honor and advance this legacy—celebrating 60 years of excellence, tradition, and unity.
